Sewer pipe lining in Orlando: a new pipe inside the old one, no slab cut

Cured-in-place pipe lining is the repair that lets a Orlando homeowner keep the tile floor, the pavers and the pool deck while the drain beneath them is rebuilt. This page explains what the liner is, which pipes qualify, how the day goes and what the paperwork should include.

What a liner is

A cured-in-place liner is a flexible tube of felt or fiberglass soaked in thermosetting resin. It is fed into the existing drain through a cleanout or a pulled fixture, either inverted with air or water pressure so it unrolls against the pipe wall, or pulled into place and inflated. Hot water, steam or ultraviolet light then cures the resin into a rigid pipe bonded to the shape of the host. The old cast iron or PVC becomes a form, and the liner becomes the pipe. The wall is a quarter inch or less, the interior is smooth, and there are no joints anywhere along the run.

Which Orlando pipes qualify

The host pipe has to do one thing: hold its shape well enough to support the liner while it cures. Cast iron that has channeled along the bottom, scaled over with tuberculation and even holed through in places still qualifies, because the sand around it holds the form and the liner bridges the holes. PVC with cracked or separated joints qualifies. Clay with cracked joints qualifies. What does not qualify is a pipe that has collapsed flat, a long belly that would remain a belly inside the liner, or a run so full of offset joints that the tube cannot pass. The camera inspection, done after a jetting pass so the wall is visible, answers the question for your line in Orlando, and the written scope should say what footage is being lined and why.

The special case of cast iron under a slab

Lining was made for the problem Orlando has. The drain under a 1965 slab house serves two bathrooms and the kitchen, runs twenty to forty feet under tile and terrazzo, and is corroded from the inside by sewer gas and from the outside by wet sand. Replacing it means cutting the floor along its full route. Lining it means a hose through the cleanout. The liner seals the channel worn along the invert, bridges the thin spots and holes, and stops the sand from washing in through them. The branch connections are reopened from inside with a cutter. The owner keeps the floor, and the pipe under it is rated for a fifty-year design life.

How the day goes

The crew arrives, jets the line, and runs the camera to confirm measurements and mark each branch connection. The liner is cut to length and the resin is mixed and worked through the tube, usually in the truck. Installation itself takes under an hour at a typical Orlando house. The cure runs three to six hours depending on the method, during which no water can be used in the house. The crew then cools and trims the liner, reopens the branches, and records the final video from end to end. A residential lateral in Orlando is done in one working day and the fixtures are back in service that evening.

What lining does not fix, and what goes with it

A liner follows the pipe, so it cannot correct grade or remove a belly. It cannot restore a collapsed section; that section is dug and replaced first, then the liner is run through the new piece. It does not clean itself: a line that was full of grease will stay clean longer because the wall is smooth, but a restaurant line still needs maintenance. And it does not refill the voids that years of infiltration left in the sand around the pipe. Where the camera found leaking joints under pavers or a pool deck, the scope should include filling those voids after the line is sealed so the surface stops moving.

Records to keep

Ask for the pre-lining video, the post-lining video, the liner manufacturer and resin specification, the permit record from the city or Orange County and the written warranty. For a home sale, an insurance file or a response to a home inspector, that package shows that the drain under the house is a new pipe and not a sixty-year-old one. The standards liners are built to and the verification of installers are described at the cured-in-place pipe reference site; this installer's verified profile is at Superior Plumbing Maintenance LLC on the CIPP verified installer list.

Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)

Does lining reduce the pipe's capacity?+

The liner takes a small amount of diameter, typically a quarter inch or so in a four-inch line, but its smooth interior carries more flow than the rough, tuberculated cast iron it replaces. In practice drains run faster after lining, not slower. Capacity becomes a concern only in a pipe that was already undersized for the fixtures it serves.

How are the branch lines from toilets and sinks reconnected?+

After the liner cures, the technician runs a camera and a robotic cutter back through the new pipe and cuts an opening at each branch connection recorded during the inspection. Each opening is checked on video. In a slab home the branches are reopened from the main run, so no fixture needs to be removed except the one used for access.

Can a Orlando house be lined if there is no cleanout?+

Yes, but adding a cleanout is usually the first step and the only digging involved. It gives the crew access for jetting, lining and the final video, and it gives you a permanent service point for the future. Lining can also be done from a pulled toilet or a roof vent when a cleanout is not practical.

Is the resin safe once cured?+

Once cured the liner is an inert, hard plastic pipe. During the cure there is a styrene odor from most polyester and vinyl ester resins, which the crew manages with ventilation and by sealing the fixtures; epoxy and UV-cured systems have less. The crew will tell you what resin is being used and what to expect during the day.

How long does a sewer liner last?+

Cured-in-place liners are engineered for a design life of about fifty years, and the installer should provide a written warranty along with the liner specification. Because the new pipe has no joints, it is not subject to the root intrusion and groundwater infiltration that destroyed the original. The final video is your record of its condition at installation.
